1/23/2002 Best Phone Call Ever
I rarely enter contests but the Star Trek website had this cool thing that let you arrange video clips and sound effects into a mini movie. In order to email it, you had to enter the contest. I never win so I didn't even really pay attention to the prize.I got a phone call from some weird company in LA that told me I had won. "Won what?" I asked. "You've won first prize." "And first prize was what?" "Do you know much about computers?" "A bit." "Most of this is greek to me, but you won a Pentium 4 2Ghz computer with 2 40gb ata harddrives, DVD-rom, CD-RW, running windows XP ... video cards, sound cards... yadda yadda yadda." Did I hear her correctly? "Pardon, you are saying I won this? I haven't just won a chance to win?" "No, sir, Mr. Francis. While I can't say you ARE the winner right now because you need to sign the papers we are going to send to you to be officially the winner, I assure you that you don't need to buy a timeshare, send any money, write any letters, or do anything other than sign the forms we are going to send you and mail them back to us within 14 days." I'm still having a hard time grasping what has happened. I'm still planning on increasing my current RAM so I can play Dark Age of Camelot without having to quit every 15 minutes because everything gets real s..l..o..w. But in the back of my head, I'm thinking - "That was the best fucking phone call I've ever received."
