I tried to make fudge yesterday, my first attempt, and it reminded me why I don't bake. The exacting nature of it reminds me of chemistry class, a class I only passed because of my friend Tal's copious attention to the minute details. The fudge tastes great, I didn't burn it, but I did something wrong. Well, first off, I rushed it. I think I should have let the mixture cook a bit longer but I was fearful of burning it (remembering chemistry, I recalled sugar burns easily and seeing I had 4 cups of the stuff with evaporated milk in this pot, I was expecting the worse). I mixed in the chocolate and marshamallow creme like the recipe called for (okay, not traditional fudge, this stuff was supposed to be easier to make) and then dumped it into the waiting pan. Here was teh crucial part, I was supposed to let it cool and set - and I did, but I didn't give it long enough. I dumped it out and it mushed together. Now, I recall watching people make fudge, and I know it usually doesn't take a terribly long time for it to set, and then I recalled that they were using a marble board that had been chilled in a freezer. It provided the 'shock' necessary for the sugar to set. Anyway, the fudge was dumped into a big plastic container and shoved into the freezer. This morning, it was the right consistency. I cut out a chunk and put it on a plate to let it be at room temperature. We'll see if it turns into a liquid puddle of chocolate or if it holds form. If it liquifies, I think I'm going to ball up the fudge and dip it in chocolate to give it a firm outer coating to make it hold its shape. Why am I doing this? Well, this year I want to make up Holiday stockings and gift bags filled with candy, cookies, and tidbits for my friends. I believe this will be cheaper, more appreciated, and more interesting than another gift certificate for a book or cd at Borders. Of course, this first attempt did not give me a good feeling. My next candy attempt is going to be divinity, which is a wonderful fluffed egg white candy. I don't have an electric mixer, so that is a lot of beating by hand(stop giggling!). I know I can do it, though, because I made Tom and Jerry's on Saturday. My current task at hand though is to find a killer outfit for this year's Saturnalia. I've been scouring the International Male catalog (and drooling over the Opera Coat and the new Moulin Rouge coat) but can't justify spending the $250 to get the complete outfit I want. They have these wonderful Tux shirts that I would look amazing in, yet, that is a lot of money for a shirt that wouldn't get a lot of use. It isn't like I have a Saturnalia event to go to every month. I may have to settle for the coat or for the shirt and Giovanni slacks - but not both. I have a few thrift stores to hit before the event, and I'm sure Therese will want to do some shopping. Saturnalia is a big event 'round these parts, and it is a difficult event for the women, because invariably, a few people will be wearing the same dress, due to the limited number of unique clothing shops. I know people who take trips to New York or New Orleans in order to have unique dresses. Men have it so much easier.
