<< The Stygian Labyrinth << Boufdot | 11/8/2001 Tunnel of Righteousness
I believe I am seeing a phenomenon that has been spooling for quite some time come to light. People appear to live their lives in a Tunnel of Righteousness. Somehow they believe their actions, thoughts, and beliefs have been perfectly arrived at, that they are perfectly tolerant and open-minded. Thus when they make a critical remark, it isn't a 'critical' remark, it is an observation made from a perfectly righteous position and any reaction to the critical remark is an unexpected emotional outburst. Argument, dear friends, is a dead sport. Any attempt to raise a counter-point is met with a reassertion of the primary point or is sloughed off as irrational. Whatever happened to lively debate? It isn't possible to be passionate about anything unless you are fanatical about it. The moment you admit you like something, people line up to shake their heads and "tsk tsk" your poor taste. Balderdash, I say. If people think I am irrational on a few issues because I have chosen to be passionate yet not fanatical (the difference being a fanatic wants to know every nuanced detail of a subject while someone passionate about it doesn't necessarily care about all the nuanced details). From the Tunnel of Righteousness, people become astonished when a critical remark is made about something they have deemed 'good'. Why? Because if they have deemed it good, and they are rational, than it only follows it is rationally good. Tish Tosh! I saw, and yes, I'll say it again, Tish Tosh! Of course, I'm not talking about going back to flame wars, but why not going back to a time when the best response to a idea was another idea? If I think a film sucks, then I should make a film that shows why it sucks. If I lack the skill to make the film, I can at least outline the basics of a film that could be made that would demonstrate those points. If I read a story I don't like, write another to counter it. If I like a story I like, write one that compliments it. Let's throw away destructive behavior and engage in constructive behavior. Let's take actions that ADD to the world, not SUBTRACTS.
