7/29/2002 Thieves and Cons
Backing up a few days to Thursday night. I was preparing to leave work when we discovered pry marks on the door to the VP's office. We were trying to figure out if they had been there or not. A coworker's briefcase had come up missing that morning so we know larceny was afoot. We had a mission critical laptop in the office and decided to move it to the phone closet, a more secure location. In locking up the Tech Room, the acting manager noticed the door wouldn't shut properly. We pulled and lifted, and did all sorts of things and couldn't get it to lock. I then said, let's not worry about it and I will move the laptops stored there into the phone closet -- only to discover those laptops were missing. Three laptops, gone. As I surveyed the room, I noticed a Canadian Dry ginger ale can sitting on the cart. The tech who works in that room rarely drinks soda and our vending machines don't dispense Canadian Dry. The only people who have access to the Tech Room (legal access) are the IT staff, which means (dun-dun-duh) it was the thief's soda can. I called the manager over and pointed to the can - 'no one touch this, its evidence.' I made sure they had my phone number handy and told them that I was going to be away from home on Friday, but if the police have any questions, they can leave me a number on my answering machine. Thankfully, no message. I spent the day at Great America - it wasn't ideal as the second ride I went on not only sent me into a mild shock but sapped all my energy. Vertical Velocity - it just isn't meant to be a morning ride. 0 to 40mph in three seconds, a 90 degree turn straight up into a corkscrew where the coaster slows and reverses course into another 90 degree turn straight up, back into the corkscrew and back, again. The second time up the backside the coaster brakes and you dangle for less than a second, staring straight down at the ground, as necklaces and other loose stuff dangles perilously around your face. I could have handled it if it had been just a bit later in the day. Saturday was recovery. Sunday was being lazy. Monday is so far turning out to be terrible. One dead harddrive, pile-up from Friday, and general craziness after the break-in.
