4/30/2002 PDA - PDQ!
I broke down (or got the nerve, or some other random phrase to introduce this entry) and bought a Handspring Visor Neo. My rationale was simple. I needed something that would allow me to write (create electronic documents) away from the computer. I find that I write a lot on paper but none of that makes it to an electronic file so eventually gets lost. I was going to try to get a cheap laptop, but decided that anything I got would be an enticement NOT to write, as I would turn it into a portable arcade. After countless hours of research, I determined the Visor Neo was the item for me. It is a low end entry running the Palm OS which gives me access to a shitload of free software including the word processing program FreeWrite. I haven't even bothered to look for what I can pirated. All I need now is an attachable keyboard, preferably something close to full size, but I've been doing pretty good just with the virtual keyboard and Grafitti(sp?). Of course, I had to download a few games - Space Trader (anyone remember Elite?) and Blocks (Tetris). Good for the El. Now I can write in some comfort (sitting at a desk is not conducive to my creativity) and probably email more. Tracy (SmoonN) was the lucky first recipient of my Visor created email. There is no prize associated with that honor, especially not CAKE, but it is an honor, oh yes, quite an honor. I've even been more thorough in updating all my contacts in Outlook (which reminds me, people, I had the Klez virus pass through my system - my AV software should have caught it, but you can't be too safe. As I was doing a thorough cleanup with the AV software, I came across some nasty Trojan Horses which explain why I was getting all sorts of weird alerts on my firewall, people from New Zealand trying to connect to my system, etc. I had been violated!! Now I have to run all the programs that check Windows integrity. Probably nothing interesting was damaged. If I'm going to be hacked, at least the hackers could use my computer to hid secret anti-gravity plans on my system and thrust me into a post-modern world of cybercrime ending with my coming face to face with an AI who is playing god in cyberspace who takes the plans from me because 'humanity is not ready for such knowledge.'
