3/22/2002 Dreams of Power
Illinois just had its primary and the Republican candidate for Governor and the Democratic candidate for Governor are an asshole and an idiot respectively. I think this is what led me to have the dream I had last night. I dreamed I ran for governor of Illinois. All I did was declare my candidacy and hold a press conference. I was asked by a reporter why I was running and I said it was because I wanted someone on the ticket that I could feel comfortable voting for and no other reason. I was then asked what I would do when I was in office. This part of the dream was definately colored by a conversation I had with my boss yesterday about funding education. My answer, as best as I recall it was I was going to mandate funding for schools from the state level instead of the community level. Money for schools would come from income taxes not property taxes. Each school would get $1,000 for each student a year (distributed quarterly to account for new students and transfers, no Pump Up the Volume scandals). I remember telling the reporters that funding for roads would be done on a county level and be funded through property taxes and general account funds. Rarely do I dream about policy on such a detailed level. Rarely do I dream about public policy at all.
