FEATURE The Blair Witch Project WARNING: Do not read this review if you have not seen the movie. It is an antithetical statement. Why would you read a review after seeing the movie? Aren't reviews supposed to help you decide if you want to see it or not? Typically, yes. The Blair Witch Project is an exception. This movie needs to be seen without any preconceived ideas. Watch the television special, read the journal on the website, watch all the clips, but do not allow someone to tell you about this movie. Do not allow someone to say this was the greatest movie of all time, or the suckiest B flick ever made. None of this matters. All that matters is you walk into that theatre with only your wits. Its just you and the screen. The true wonder of the Blair Witch is it allows the viewer to interpret everything in their own way. The now infamous "Pile o' Josh" Heather found is being tossed around as a bit of poor filmmaking. What was it? Why didn't she tell Mike? That is all part of the puzzle, you as the viewer, have to struggle with. What was the bloody mess? Why didn't she tell Mike? Answer the question yourself given all the information provided. Don't even rely upon the movie to tell you. The movie has the characters talking to each other. There isn't an internal monologue letting you in on what they are feeling. You have to intuit, surmise, guess. This is not a movie for passive viewers. You are required to go along with the filmmakers on a very arduous journey. You can see their boredom as they play with their cameras. You can see their tension as they hint towards a 'No Exit' scenario. All of this gathers together, making those 87 minutes the creepiest 87 minutes ever. When you leave the theatre, all you can say is you are glad it didn't go on any longer because you would have been forced to scream to relieve the building tension. The rewatchability of this film isn't very good. But the story is still good. You can appreciate the acting more. Think of it like opening a can of beer nuts and having spring snakes shoot out at you. It scares you the first time. After that, it becomes a good joke to play on someone else. |
