FEATURE Messi@h - A Book By Andrei Codrescu Who would believe that New Orleans would be the site for the Final Judgment because it is a humid city? Andre Codrescu, a poet, NPR commentator, essayist and author of the novel Blood Countess brings his talent to bear on the millennium and the Final Judgment, or to fit into the theme of the book, the Next Judgment. While the book had its moments where the story got too ethereal, the pacing of the overall plot made those moments pleasingly brief. Codrescu has the ability to use the English language to paint each scene as if it were individual portraits that stand by themselves. Through this technique reading the novel felt like reading several short stories strongly tied together through fascinating if not completely bizarre characters. One element of this book which makes it worthwhile is the length of time the concepts stick with you. Again this is a Codrescu trait, his writings plant a virus in your mind that colors your world. Blood Countess had a similar effect. Messi@h's blending of traditions, blending of cultures and blending of sexuality clearly alters the reader's perceptions, a hallmark of good literature.
